Establish a Local Operating Entity Formation

2023-2026

In 2016, we held community design sessions that, unfortunately, were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Fast forward to 2024. We’ll host gatherings to share project updates and provide opportunities to envision ways to use the spaces and vet our new entity's governance and leadership structures. We’ll focus on creating a model prioritizing racial equity and community accountability.

There are fundraising two tracks for the Ambassador.

Track One - Construction and outfitting: The total funds raised for construction and outfitting costs are expected to reach $25M.
$10 M has been raised as of January 2024.

Track Two - Sustainability: The fundraising goal to sustain the new operating entity in the early years of its development is $5M. Fundraising for this phase has just begun.

The Ambassador in MD is now a state-designated historic landmark. Updating the space for contemporary use involves a blend of science, art, and patience. Currently, there's ongoing environmental remediation to address fire damage and years of neglect. The next steps include implementing the architect's community-approved design and installing modern equipment, supplies, and flexible furnishings to revive the space. Look for announcements of the grand opening, which is expected to be late in 2026.

The governance, leadership, and decision-making model for the Ambassador will center power within those expected to benefit from this facility. Weaving together the voices of neighbors and artists is a process of testing, learning, tweaking, and improving our approaches that will be embedded in the way the Ambassador operates in the future. Along the way, increase everyone’s understanding of and ability to bond with each other and work together on shared goals.

It takes time to get an organization on its feet. It involves putting the right people in key roles, implementing a sustainability plan, developing programs and operations, and keeping track of its impact. All this requires careful planning and being responsive to people and the environment. During this time, Ambassador Arts will put the systems and processes in place that support its mission and values and prepare it to be an independent entity.

2033

Now it’s time to celebrate! Ownership of Ambassador Arts, the heart of black culture and art in Northwest Baltimore, will transfer to this community free of any of the debt incurred during construction.
